HomeTechnology PoliciesHow Adoption of Artificial Intelligence Could Help Fight Climate Change in Nigeria Leadership How Adoption of Artificial Intelligence Could Help Fight Climate Change in Nigeria Today’s weather is very unpredictable, the impact it’s having on economic growth and development is challenging. The weather pattern is rapidly affecting the environment causing major economic and health hazard to the environment. The greatest cause of this climate anomaly is Carbon-dioxide emission, fossil fuel burning is also a contributing factor for these emissions. Climate is generally the average weather condition in a geographical location for many years. Climate change is a slight shift in those weather conditions. According to a report by BBC news on Climate change the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere-CO2 has risen about 50% since the 19th century and 12% in the past two decades. Deforestation is also a cause of greenhouse gas emission because when trees are cut the carbons they store are released into the atmosphere. A recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers for Microsoft that tech innovations could help reduce global greenhouse gas emission by 2030 to 4%. The Climate change effect on the environment is huge and it has caused so much environmental devastation like storm, flooding, wildfire and droughts e.t.c. Artificial intelligence and Machine learning are progressively accepted as an idea to foretell and reduce the impact of climate change on our lives and the environment. Artificial Intelligence is the benchmark used in some developed countries to send natural disaster alert, monitor deforestation and it used for designing smart cities. Based on the study by PricewaterhouseCoopers for Microsoft, technology that are Artificial Intelligence modeled could help cut global greenhouse gas emissions by 4%. This study also asserted that machine learning products could be developed for climate change market. According to Pete Clutton-Brock of Centre for AI & Climate Change in his opinion write-up about Climate Change. The UK’s government proposal by Climate Change Committee called Sixth Carbon Budget is proposing the UK’s territorial carbon emission should be reduce by 78% in 2035. AI and Machine Learning can help estimate and process large amounts of graphical data like maps, images and real life pictures of the weather and environment disaster. This model helps to understand the dynamics of climate change and preparing for possible environmental and weather mishap. Many technology firms are coming up with AI computational ideas to create a market for Climate Change using computer based model. One of such companies is Climavision which has a climate based technology that is built bottom-up combining terrestrial sensors with space based observations. It has also created a model of getting accurate pictures and imagery through weather intelligence. The model is powered by a sensor based network that gives the highest resolution data and cutting edge predictions. In Nigeria Climate Change is getting the right attention, policy makers are trying to formulate policies that would make major cities to be climate change resilience. The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola on World Habitat Day held in Abuja, stated that the government is “Accelerating urban action for a carbon free world and Adopting cities for climate resilience.” Also, United Nations Humans Settlements Program on UN-Habitat has called for a team work to ensure that climate goals are met through implementation of the New Urban Agenda in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. The Minister also reiterated that the government is committed to Sustainable Development Goal 11 which is to make Nigerian cities, “Inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” According to him,” In the same vein, the main objectives of Cities Day 2021 are to: Increase awareness on Climate Change adaptation urban resilience; Inspire effective climate action at the local level by sharing knowledge on effective urban system resilience solutions and contribute to the implementation of New Urban Agenda, Social Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Paris Agreement for Climate Change to achieve Sustainable Development Goals,(SDGs).” The Nigeria government needs to create a template that is technology based to predict and gather data that are weather based through weather intelligence application to build a resilient society for all in Nigeria by 2035.
